Baseball classes at a nursing home.
On Friday, December 27, 2024, Hidetaka Namiki and I visited "Ohsato," a children's home in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, to teach a baseball lesson. The "PRIVATE" gallery has been added to show scenes from the day's events. A total of 28 children from six facilities in Kumagaya and beyond participated in the class. Matsumoto was unable to receive the ball due to an injury to his hand, but he gave advice on the position of his feet when catching the ball, how to put his glove out for defense, and how to take the timing of batting. The fleet-footed Namiki gave advice on how to practice base running, and at the end of the practice, a running race was held with the children! In the two batting practice sessions (toss batting), the children who could not hit the ball in the first session, after receiving advice, showed excellent batting in the second session. Despite the cloudy skies and windy, bitter cold weather, we had an enjoyable and fulfilling time with the children.

I started playing baseball when I was in elementary school. I was a member of the Kanayama Baseball Sports Boys Club.
At the national Sakaide Junior High School attached to the Kagawa University Faculty of Education, under the guidance of coach Kenji Nagao, the team achieved second place in the Shikoku Tournament with less than one hour of practice time after school.
At Marugame High School, he lost a complete game to Eimei High School with Tatsuya Matsumoto in the final of the National High School Baseball Championship Kagawa Tournament in the summer of his junior year.
He entered Rikkyo University through the general entrance examination and played a total of 13 league games (3 full games) on the hardball team, but ended up without a hit.
He sometimes suffered from the yips in the spring of his second year of college, and at times he thought about quitting baseball.
However, he made rapid progress in his first year at Seino Unyu, where he was a member of the workforce, and was named the regular catcher. He contributed to the team's top 8 finish in the Inter-City Baseball Tournament. He did not allow a single stolen base during the tournament.
He was selected seventh overall by the Tokyo Yakult Swallows at the 2017 draft meeting and joined the team.
In addition to his strong shoulder with a long throw of 120 meters, he has high throwing accuracy, and his time to reach second base is around 1.8 seconds.
In 2025, his eighth year as a professional, he aims to contribute to a team aiming to regain the championship and make further progress as a catcher who boasts high defensive ability.
